Did You Know Coca-Cola Would Never Have Existed Without Corsica?

Mariani tonic wine, the origin of Coca-Cola

How Corsica Inspired Coca-Cola’s Creation

Did you know that Coca-Cola’s iconic taste has roots tracing back to Corsica? It all began in 1863 in Bastia, where a Corsican pharmacist named Angelo Mariani created the "Vin Mariani," a tonic beverage made by infusing coca leaves in Bordeaux wine. This innovative drink quickly became immensely popular, attracting the admiration of prominent figures worldwide.

Mariani’s beverage rapidly gained fame, captivating notable personalities across the globe thanks to its unique blend of coca leaves and Bordeaux wine.

From Vin Mariani to Coca-Cola

Inspired by Mariani’s success, American pharmacist John Pemberton developed his own version in 1885, known as "Pemberton’s French Wine Coca," blending coca leaves and wine. However, when the state of Georgia prohibited alcohol, Pemberton adapted his recipe by replacing wine with carbonated water and sugar, giving birth to the now-famous Coca-Cola.

Thus, without Angelo Mariani’s Corsican innovation, the world's most iconic soft drink may never have existed.
